FOOTBALL 2023: Ninth Week

Since there wasn't an A&M game on TV last Saturday, I was able to use most of that day doing something other than getting extremely frustrated watching a team that looked unprepared and ineffective get thumped by a superior opponent.

The Aggies resume their season tomorrow as the home team hosting an SEC East visitor, the South Carolina Gamecocks. This will be the early kickoff (11:00 AM) game on ESPN, and the Aggies (4-3) are favored by two touchdowns over the Gamecocks (2-5). With the exception of their home game against Abilene Christian (4-3) in a few weeks, tomorrow's match might be Jimbo's last chance to achieve a victory this year. Other remaining games are at Ole Miss (6-1), at home against Mississippi State (4-3), and at LSU (6-2), and I don't see a probable win in that group.

With two weeks to prepare, maybe A&M can keep the Gamecocks penned up in bad field position with their defense, and dominate time of possession with some exciting offense (for a change). College Football News is predicting a 34-23 Aggie win. The Aggies haven't scored that many points since their last win against Arkansas, so I'm not expecting much from Bobby Petrino's offense.

Update Saturday 12:35 PM: Texas A&M got off to a sluggish start, fell behind 7-0, then scored three unanswered touchdowns to lead 21-7 at halftime.

Final update 2:52 PM: The second half was a 10-9 win for the Gamecocks when three promising A&M drives fizzled out and ended in field goals instead of touchdowns. Final score was 30-17 and Jimbo picked up that important fifth win, which should ensure no worse than a 6-6 season (with ACU still pending).
