Something to cheer you up, Mr. President...
I frankly don't know how Obama makes it through the day. It seems like every morning there's a new shit storm in the headlines, and most people are pissed off because (a) Obama caused the problem, or (b) Obama didn't prevent the problem, or (c) that N doesn't belong in the White House.
I have a suggestion, though. Whenever I get discouraged by all the shit storms in the news, I go to wonkette.com, the one website that is guaranteed to present current events in a manner that will make me laugh. Tonight I came across an item that made me feel good, and would probably make Obama feel good, too. According to wonkette, there is a poll that shows Obama would kick Sarah Palin's ass in the election. She's the only Republican on the goddamned planet he can beat, but it should cheer him up to know that somewhere there is one. So take my advice, Mr. President, and bookmark wonkette.com. You'll be glad you did.

Uh oh... trouble brewing...
As Obama negotiates with the Republicans in Congress over the budget deal, it looks more and more like he's willing to hang the congressional Democrats out to dry. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he has an intelligent plan that will ultimately serve the best interests of the country, but he's making it harder to do that every day.
What looks like a real possibility is that Obama will blow the budget deal out his ass, giving the Republicans a cheap win, and his loyal supporters will desert him in droves. If that happens, we're fucked. I'm trying not to visualize the horror of President Rick Perry with strong GOP majorities in the House and Senate. God knows, the last time we played a hand like that things didn't work out too well.

More Newzzzzzzz...
As if he didn't have enough war to deal with in Afghanistan, it now seems that Obama is at war with Fox News Channel. Seriously, who gives a spinning shit about this "controversy" except the usual whine-and-cheese crowd on the right wing ? No one with a lick of sense REALLY believes that FNC is a legitimate, objective news organization, and that includes many conservatives.

Health care and unanswered questions
My bro believes that Obama's address to Congress last night left two questions unanswered: Will Obama be able to get a bill passed, and what will it look like ? He noted that the Republicans in the audience had to sit on their hands to avoid giving the president an EMF (the emphatic extended middle finger).
One of them couldn't control himself, and this item explains why I've written the whole health care reform issue off as a lost cause.
Health care reform, or HCR for brevity's sake, has always been about Obama, but never been up to Obama.
Republicans have known since election night last November that if Obama could deliver the kind of change he was promising, they'd be on the outside looking in for at least a decade, maybe more. Significant economic recovery and an improved health care system on Obama's watch wouldn't necessarily destroy the Republican party, but would make it harder for them to win elections. Since the Reagan era began, Republicans have used fear of liberalism as their main weapon in the political wars. If voters ever lose that fear, the GOP has nothing left to sell.
After tagging Obama as the worst kind of liberal, the commie-socialist-Marxist kind, there's no way Republicans can allow him to succeed, particularly in an area of as much interest to the typical voter as health care services. That's why I say HCR has always been about Obama, to the extent that conservatives call it Obamacare.
In our system of government, Obamacare isn't really up to Obama, though. It's up to Congress, where there are still plenty of Republicans committed to gumming up the works. The GOP strategy is a scorched earth, take-no-prisoners campaign which exploits fear and greed, two commodities in plentiful supply among American voters, to kill Obamacare -- or at least cripple it to the point it's certain to fail. In poker terms, they're all in this time. That's why Rep. Joe Wilson is being referred to as a great hero at websites like Red State.
Like my bro and his wife, Mrs. bee and I have health insurance coverage that is satisfactory in virtually all aspects. Ours is available through government retirement systems, is affordable, and thus far has come through like gangbusters every time we've needed it. From a purely selfish perspective, I don't have a dog in the HCR fight. My main concern now is that Republicans don't fuck things up so badly that we lose what we already have. They're capable of it.

Afterbirth
During the recent presidential campaign, a number of wildass rumors were started about the Democratic candidate. Obama was a Muslim, a terrorist, a radical, a socialist, an elitist... the list of things Obama was supposed to be just went on and on. A few idiots finally decided there was one thing Obama was NOT: a citizen of the United States. Because he didn't meet this crucial qualification, he was ineligible to become president. This sheer idiocy was based on different criteria, depending on which of the fucking lunatics you were listening to. The latest collection of American conspiracy theorists is referred to as the birthers, since their allegations involve where and to whom Barry was born.
At any rate, once the votes were counted and Obama had won, the foolishness didn't just come to an end. Instead, lawsuits have been filed in an attempt to overturn the election results, and today the USSC has decided that it won't hear one of the birther cases.
There's part of me that wants to be sympathetic to the birthers. I can understand a condition of temporary insanity induced by the election of someone you absolutely despise to the nation's highest executive office. Been there, done that after all. On the other hand, I can see the merits in an argument that people on the outer fringes of conservatism should be rounded up and shipped to huge detention facilities in Idaho. Start with the AM radio icons and the worst of the congressional Republicans and work your way down the list from there.
