FOOTBALL 2023: Tenth Week

The regular season is winding down, and Texas A&M is entering the part of its schedule where the butt-kickings should come regularly (exception: Abilene Christian). The first of what could be at least three ass-whippings takes place at 11:00 AM on ESPN when the Aggies (5-3) visit Ole Miss (7-1) as a three-point underdog. The Aggies have a formidable defense that ranks highly in the SEC, but the offense is marginal under Max Johnson's leadership at quarterback. College Football News is forecasting a fairly close score since the A&M defense is adequate, but Ole Miss is expected to win 24-20 by gaining an edge in turnovers.

Final update 3:53 PM Saturday: Okay, it wasn't the ass-whipping I anticipated, but it was still another loss for A&M in the SEC West. The Aggies played well enough on defense and special teams (a blocked FG returned 75 yards for a TD) to keep the score so close that a late upset road win was possible. Unfortunately, they didn't play well enough on offense to close the deal against a top 10 opponent. If a long attempted FG on the last play had been good, the game would have gone into overtime. Instead, Texas A&M lost again (38-35). Eventually, decision makers at Texas A&M will need to make a big one about keeping Jimbo on the payroll. Sumlin was released because 8-5 seasons weren't acceptable.
