FOOTBALL 2022: Consequences

It's December 22nd, three days before Christmas, the time of the year when all the really good college football teams are preparing to play in an upper-tier bowl game. Texas A&M is sometimes among them, or is at least invited to a middle-tier game, but not this year. The Aggies couldn't scrape together a 6-6 record, thanks to their inability to beat Appalachian State in game two and Alabama in a game the Tide tried hard to lose. The blame for this situation rests squarely on a coaching staff that's a notch below mediocre.

Instead of getting the team ready to play a post-Xmas bowl game, Jimbo and his assistants can focus on recruiting. The early signing day was yesterday, and A&M managed to collect letters of intent from a small group (sixteen) that has some blue-chip players, but not many.

Recruiting is off to an unimpressive start, which is unfortunate since the current number of 2022 team members who have entered the transfer portal is twenty-six, more than the number of yesterday's signees Among the 26 in the portal are 16 of the highly-rated (4-5 star) recruits that helped Jimbo's most recent classes be nationally ranked in the top ten.

When the new arrivals aren't equal in numbers and talent to those departing, the usual result is extended substandard team performance unless the coaching staff is superior, which the one at Texas A&M isn't.

I'll be surprised if A&M isn't coping with the consequences of the 2022 disaster for several seasons to come.
