FOOTBALL 2022: Almost Closing Time

The transfer portal continues to be the popular destination for A&M football players. At last report, there are 29 potential escapees, seventeen of whom are at least four star recruits. This has the look of a promising talent pool being drained. The portal is still open for over a week, so the drainage may continue awhile.

The big story at A&M is Jimbo's decision to hire Bobby Petrino as his offensive coordinator. This is a guy who has a mixed record as a head coach, with stopovers at Louisville and Arkansas being his brighter spots. Petrino also has some blemishes on his record in the form of questionable behavior, so this may be a matter of Jimbo scrounging around the back of the closet for another salvage hire. It's also possible that Texas A&M no longer rates as a prestige career move for the cream of the assistant coaching crop.

Tomorrow night the 2022 season will finally reach its official conclusion when Georgia plays TCU in the CFP national championship game as a 12.5 point favorite. I started hating TCU when they were on A&M's schedule every year as a Southwest Conference opponent, so it won't bother me if Georgia covers the spread.

Final update 12:08 PM Wednesday 11 January: I only watched a few minutes of the game, enough to confirm that TCU probably shouldn't have been in it. Georgia cruised to a 65-7 win. Enough said.
