Football 2019: Conference Championships

This is a big weekend in the world of college football. The dream here is that Texas A&M will eventually be included among the elite teams that compete in conference championship games on a regular basis. The last time the Aggies were within sniffing distance of one, in 1998, the head coach was R.C. Slocum and the opponent was Kansas State. Leaving the BDF for the SEC wasn't even in the planning stages yet.

The Pac 12 got things started last night, when Oregon beat Utah 37-15. Today, the BDF (aka the Big 12 minus 2) features a showdown between Oklahoma (11-1) and Baylor (11-1), with the sooners favored by 8 1/2 points. I'll probably watch some of this, only because I hate both teams and one of them has to lose. The game is on ABC at 11:00 AM.

Next on the TV schedule comes the SEC championship game on CBS at 3:00 PM. Oddly enough, Texas A&M finished the season on the road, playing consecutive games at Georgia (11-1) and at LSU (12-0). The Aggies were fairly competitive against the bulldogs, but suffered an old-fashioned ass-whipping at Baton Rouge. The Bulldogs are a 7-point underdog, and I expect they'll have a hard time keeping the score close enough to beat the spread.

Clemson, another elite team that thumped A&M early in the season, is unbeaten (12-0) and should lock up the ACC championship against Virginia (9-3) as a four TD favorite.

Ohio State (12-0) is favored by 16 to beat Wisconsin (10-2) for the Big Ten crown. I'm pulling for Wisconsin, but that's an exercise in futility.

College Football News predicted scores:
  • Oklahoma 31 Baylor 27 (Oklahoma won 30-23)
  • LSU 27 Georgia 17 (LSU won 37-10)
  • Clemson 41 Virginia 14 (Clemson won 62-17)
  • Ohio State 34 Wisconsin 16 (Ohio State won 34-21)
