Football 2019: The Bowl Games

When last seen, Texas A&M was collapsing in a 50-7 loss to LSU on the road at Baton Rouge. That result was shabby enough to land the Aggies (7-5) in the Texas Bowl against a former BDF rival, Oklahoma State (8-4). In my ideal world, A&M would never play any Big 12 teams again, but I don't make those calls. The game will be played Friday at 5:45 PM on ESPN, with the Aggies favored by a touchdown.

The Okie State Cowboys were a pain in the ass when the Aggies were playing them every year as members of the Big 12 South, back in the old days when there really were 12 teams in the Big 12. In the first dozen games (1996-2007), the Aggies could usually count on a win, going 10-2 while OSU was one of the weaker teams in the division. Things changed in the last four games (2008-2011), with A&M going 0-4 during Mike Sherman's tenure. The last time A&M played a former BDF opponent in this bowl game, the result was a loss to Kansas State.

Bottom line, A&M playing OSU in the Texas Bowl has plenty of downside for me. Kellen Mond performed pretty well in the second half of the 2018 season, but didn't show much improvement in 2019. I can see him coughing up another loss against the Cowboys, and losing to any BDF team is intolerable.

College Football News is predicting a 38-24 win for Texas A&M.

Update 9:09 PM Friday 27 December: Okie State got a quick 14-0 lead and I came within an inch of turning off the game late in the 1st quarter. I procrastinated long enough to see the Aggies score and score again, 24 unanswered points in all. The Okies got a late TD with around a minute to play, but A&M covered the onside kick and got out of town with a 24-21 win. Not a work of art, but any win over a Big 12 team is a good win.

Update 5:16 PM Saturday 28 December: LSU looks like a killing machine against Oklahoma, leading 49-14 at halftime. Big 12 is overrated.

Update 12:18 AM Sunday 29 December: LSU made it look easy with their 63-28 rout of OU, but Clemson fell behind Ohio State 16-0 before making their comeback to win 29-23. They face LSU in the national championship game, and I hope they win again in that matchup.
