Football 2019: Week Thirteen

Texas A&M has two regular season games remaining that will determine whether 2019 was disappointing or successful. If A&M wins both to finish 9-3, I imagine most Aggie supporters will experience pride mixed with relief. If A&M loses both, I'd expect their mood will be disappointment that the team went 0-5 against the best teams they played.

A&M (7-3) visits Georgia (9-1) in the SEC showcase game at 2:30 PM on CBS. The Bulldogs are favored by roughly two touchdowns. College Football News compares the mediocre A&M rushing offense to Georgia's excellent rushing defense and predicts the Aggies will lose 27-17 in a slugfest. The only reason I might give A&M a ray of hope is that Georgia lost at home to South Carolina in their sixth game. The Aggies beat the Gamecocks 30-6 in their tenth game. I know comparative scores are fairly meaningless, but that's all I have.

The only other game I'm interested in tomorrow features Texas U (6-4) at Baylor (9-1) in the BDF. Baylor has been better than expected, the longhorns not as good as expected. The bears are a slight (5 point) favorite, and CFN expects them to beat the longhorns 34-27. Since I hate Baylor slightly less that I hate Texas U, that score would be satisfactory.

Update 4:08 PM Saturday: The game's about as dreary as I expected it to be. The rainy weather slowed both offenses down, but Georgia found a way to move the ball in the second quarter, and leads 13-3 at the half. Unless something changes in the second half, that field goal might be all the points the Aggies have when it's over.

Update 6:21 PM: The Aggies were better than I thought they'd be, but not quite as good as I hoped they'd be. That's pretty much been the story since R.C. Slocum replaced Jackie Sherrill. The defense kept Georgia under control other than one TD drive, and the offense finally found a spark in the 4th quarter to make the game tense toward the end. Still, Georgia won 19-13, and the only Aggies that are happy are those that took A&M plus the points.

In the BDF, Baylor handled Texas U with a 24-10 win. That drops the horns to 6-5, but there were experts who thought they might make the playoff.
