Football 2019: Week Nine

It's late October and SEC football has gotten serious, with nothing but conference games on the schedule tomorrow.

Mississippi State (3-4) plays at Texas A&M (4-3) at 11:00 AM on the SEC Network, with A&M favored by 10.5 points at home. Since the Aggies play in the SEC West and face Alabama, Auburn and LSU every season, it's critically important that they sweep the two Mississippi schools to have a realistic shot at nine wins or more. There have been too many years when the Aggies struggled against both opponents.

MSU isn't as dangerous now as they've been in recent seasons, but A&M's offensive style under Jimbo Fisher works to their advantage. The Aggies concentrate on ball control rather than explosive up-tempo offense, which should mean the Bulldogs won't need to score a lot of points to keep the score close.

College Football News predicts a slugfest between two teams that are relatively equal, with A&M coming out on top in a 27-16 win. Since the game has an early start, I'll probably watch it until A&M is behind by 14 points or more. With luck, the Aggies will never trail on the scoreboard, but that's not something I can depend on.

The other potentially interesting game is the 2:30 showcase on CBS, with Auburn (6-1) at Louisiana State (7-0). The home team is a 12-point favorite, and CFN expects LSU will win 31-24. I may watch some of this to see if any LSU weaknesses are exposed, but so far, it doesn't seem like they have very many.

Update 12:45 PM Saturday: The Aggies haven't been awesome, but they've been good enough to lead the Bulldogs 28-10 at halftime.

Update 2:44 PM Saturday: The final score was 49-30 in A&M's favor. MSU got a handful of big plays, enough to produce four touchdowns. Otherwise, it was a good day for the Aggies.
