Football 2019: Week Eight

This is quickly turning into a "Who cares" season for me. So far, Texas A&M has won the three games they should have won, and lost the two they should've lost (Clemson and Alabama). If the Aggies had taken care of business at home against Auburn, my outlook would be more enthusiastic. But that didn't happen, so here we are.

The Aggies are on the road against Ole Miss tomorrow (SEC Network 6:00 PM). Ole Miss at 3-4 is arguably worse than A&M, but only a slight 5.5 point underdog at home. College Football News predicts a strong Ole Miss running game will keep this one close, but the A&M passing game, helped by a mediocre Rebel pass defense, will allow the Aggies to escape with a 34-27 win. If they lose this game, the Aggies may as well hang up their helmets until 2020.

In other SEC games, the elite power teams (Auburn, LSU, Georgia, and Alabama) are heavily favored (by 18 points or more) against Arkansas, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Tennessee respectively. Missouri is favored by three touchdowns over Vanderbilt, so the only other close game may be Florida at South Carolina (ESPN at 11:00 AM). The Gators are favored by 5.5 points against the Gamecocks, who upset Georgia last weekend, and CFN expects Florida will win, 27-17.

Update 10:43 PM Saturday: I tried to watch the Ole Miss game in the first quarter, but A&M was struggling and I lost interest. We watched a Columbo rerun instead. After that ended, I went back to the game to catch the final score. It was about halfway through the 4th quarter, and the Aggies were ahead 17-14. They got another TD with about 3 minutes remaining to take a 10-point lead at 24-14. I figured I'd better turn off the game so I wouldn't jinx them. According to ESPN, the final score was 24-17, so A&M gave up a late FG. Not a spectacular win, but a loss would have basically ended the season.
