Football 2019: Week Four

Today, Texas A&M gets the second of five extremely difficult tests when Auburn(3-0) comes to town. The first test was potentially the hardest one, the week two road game against Clemson. The Aggies failed that one in a 24-10 loss, largely because of an ineffective passing offense with Kellen Mond at quarterback. It reminded me of games A&M lost in 2018 against Mississippi State and Auburn.

It's an excellent example of Aggie Luck that in Jimbo Fisher's second season, when A&M supporters hoped to see bonus dividends on their investment, the Aggies are stuck with arguably the toughest schedule in college football this year. After Auburn, the Aggies still face Alabama and MSU at home, then finish on the road against Georgia and LSU. That's brutal. They'll probably need at least two major upsets to match the 9-4 record in 2018.

I've seen two different betting lines on today's game, which earned the 2:30 PM showcase slot on CBS. One had Auburn favored by 4 points, the other picked A&M by about the same margin (maybe a typo). College Football News predicts the Aggies will eke out a 22-16 win in a slugfest decided by an edge in the kicking game.

The other SEC game of note features Notre Dame at Georgia as a two-touchdown underdog (at 7:00 PM on CBS). The CFN prediction: Bulldogs win 27-17 in an entertaining game. This one interests me mainly because A&M plays at Georgia in game number 11, and this is an opportunity to scout them against a good opponent.

Update 3:26 PM Saturday: Auburn owns this one so far, leading 14-0 heading into the second quarter. Several penalties against Auburn have kept it as close as it is.

Update 6:56 PM Saturday: I quit when it was 14-0 and watched American Sniper on Blu-ray instead. Checked the ESPN scoreboard and saw it ended 28-20. Looks like Jimbo has a lot of work still ahead of him.
