Football 2017: Week Eleven

We're down to the final three regular season games in what could end up being the last season of Kevin Sumlin's tenure at Texas A&M. After three consecutive 8-5 finishes, the Aggies will need some lucky breaks to finish better than .500 in 2017. The game tomorrow against New Mexico is the closest thing to an easy A&M win among the remaining games, and features the return of Bob Davie, one of the best defensive coordinators the Aggies ever had. He'll be on the opposing sideline this time, and his team is an 18-point underdog. College Football News predicts A&M will win 38-16. The game starts at 6:00 PM on ESPNU, and I'll watch as much of it as I can stand. Update: The game was only meaningful as a sixth win that theoretically makes A&M eligible to play in a minor bowl game, but I'll admit it was the best overall offensive performance of the season. Having the best available quarterback playing against one of the weakest opponents on the schedule made it possible. Let's see what happens against Ole Miss next weekend. Final score 55-14.

The SEC showcase game on CBS matches unbeaten Georgia against Auburn, with the Bulldogs favored by 2.5 points as the visitor. Since the state of Alabama has given us Roy Moore as a Senate candidate, I'm pulling for Georgia to kick Auburn's ass. CFN thinks it'll be a close game, with Georgia squeaking out a 27-24 win. I'd prefer 42-0, but will settle for an Auburn loss by any score. Update 5:10 PM: Georgia is unimpressive, and Auburn is kicking the shit out of them, 30-7 in the third quarter. Final update: Auburn didn't let up and won 40-17. The state of Alabama still sucks ass.

Some of the other games on TV (with the CFN score predictions):
  • Arkansas at LSU (at 11:00 AM on ESPN). The hogs are a big underdog (17 points), and LSU should cover 38-20. Update: LSU won 33-10. No surprises.
  • Florida at South Carolina (at 11:00 AM on CBS). Two of the three SEC teams the Aggies have defeated this year. The Gamecocks are favored by a touchdown, and the forecast is a 20-16 win at home. Update: South Carolina polished off Florida 28-20.
  • Alabama at Mississippi State (at 6:00 PM on ESPN). The Aggies lost to both teams, but surprisingly, the worst ass-whipping was administered by MSU. The Tide is favored by 14.5 points, and CFN thinks they'll cover 27-10. Update: It took a touchdown pass in the last 30 seconds of the 4th quarter, but Alabama pulled out a tough 31-24 win.
  • Tennessee at Missouri (at 6:30 PM on SECN). Tennessee has fallen on hard times, and is a 12-point underdog in this hairball. Missouri is expected to win 38-24. I can't foresee wasting precious time watching any of this mess. Update: The Volunteers got steamrolled 50-17.
