This season is melting away. Texas A&M (6-2) plays Auburn (4-4) at home in a game they must win to have a chance at finishing with a respectable 9-3 record. TAMU is favored by 7 1/2 points, and Bleacher Report predicts they should rack up a 35-23 win. The game will be on SEC at 6:30 PM.
There aren't many TV games worth watching. Vanderbilt (3-5) is at Florida (7-1) at 11:00 on ESPN. The Gators are favored by three touchdowns, and Bleacher Report sees them cruising to a 28-13 victory. I'll watch some of this mismatch to see Vandy, since A&M plays them on 21 November. UPDATE 3:10 PM SATURDAY: As it turned out, this wasn't the mismatch predicted. Florida turnovers kept it close, with the Gators winning 9-7 on a late FG. The Aggies can't afford to treat Vanderbilt as an automatic W.
The CBS showcase game at 2:30 has potential. Arkansas (4-4) is at Ole Miss (7-2) as an 11-point underdog. Bleacher Report is going with the Rebels to win 26-17, but I'd like to see Arkansas pull off an upset. UPDATE 6:28 PM SATURDAY: The Razorbacks get the upset win 53-52 in the wildest overtime I ever watched.
The big game in the SEC will be on CBS at 7:00 PM, in basically the same time slot as the Auburn vs Texas A&M game. Alabama (7-1) hosts unbeaten LSU (7-0), and is a 6 1/2 point favorite. Bleacher Report forecasts a typical SEC West bloodbath with the Tide squeaking out a 23-21 win. This game will be my backup plan if the Aggie game goes bad. UPDATE: Unlike Texas A&M, Alabama understands how to play SEC football. The Tide gave LSU a 30-16 ass-kicking while demonstrating how far the Aggies are from being taken seriously in the SEC West.
UPDATE 8:05 PM SATURDAY: Auburn is ahead 14-3 at the half, and nothing has happened in the first two quarters to make me optimistic that A&M can score enough points to win tonight. Kyler Murray looks like an untested freshman and has heaved two interceptions that ended promising drives. The Aggie defense was manhandled in the first quarter, and doesn't look capable of shutting Auburn out in the second half. That's what it will probably take for A&M to steal a win they don't deserve. There's no such thing as a home field advantage for the Aggies these days.
UPDATE 9:46 PM SATURDAY: What a goddamned exercise in futility. Auburn was ahead 26-10 late in the fourth quarter when I finally gave up. Texas A&M has no offense, no defense, and the coaching sucks. There are no sure wins left on the schedule since A&M can't do anything well at this point. They're wrapping up a third consecutive season of mediocre football, and frankly, I doubt this staff is capable of producing anything other than mediocrity. Every team in the SEC has figured out how to attack A&M's defense and neutralize its offense.
