After consecutive offensive meltdowns against Alabama and Ole Miss, the gossip is that Texas A&M (5-2) will be trying something new against South Carolina (3-4). The speculation on the sports talk radio station is that Kyler Murray may get his first opportunity to start at quarterback. Last year, Kenny Hill came out of the gate like a Heisman candidate, but was on the bench by the ninth game. The guy that replaced him, Kyle Allen, is now the guy on the bench. The similarities between 2014 and 2015 continue. Hill's short flirtation with greatness started with a game against South Carolina. Maybe the QB who plays tomorrow will have durable success.
At any rate, Bleacher Report predicts A&M will win 34-17. Let's just say that A&M better win and leave it at that. The game is at 11:00 on SEC Network.
In the 11:00 game on ESPN, Bleacher Report thinks Ole Miss (6-2) will easily defeat Auburn (4-3) in a 34-21 romp. In the SEC showcase game on CBS, Florida (6-1) hosts Georgia (5-2) and Bleacher Report calls it 29-24 for the Gators. UPDATE: Ole Miss held off Auburn 27-19, and Florida gave Georgia a 27-3 thrashing. Meanwhile, in the Big Twelve Minus Two, the stronghorns were shut out 24-0 by Iowa State. Texas A&M may have problems, but they're still not in the kind of trouble the stronghorns are in.
Updated 12:40 PM Saturday: The game is tied 21-21 at the half. The A&M offense is finally showing signs of life, but the defense is falling apart. The Gamecocks put together three long scoring drives, and they already have more points than I thought they'd score for the whole game. It will piss me off if A&M lets this one get away from them.
Updated 2:18 PM Saturday: There aren't any easy games in the SEC. The Aggies won 35-28, with the winning margin provided by the defense on an interception returned for TD. All factors considered, A&M was adequate on offense and defense. Murray wasn't dazzling as a passer, but his speed and agility as a runner is an asset that Kyle Allen can't match. He added 156 yards and a rushing TD to the effort. Bottom line: I'm relieved to have this game in the W column. The Pick Six was the play of the day.
