Football 2015: Week Eight

Texas A&M has played six of its twelve regular season games, and is coming off a loss to Alabama that was gift-wrapped after three Kyle Allen INTs were returned for TDs. This week doesn't look much easier, with A&M as a six point underdog on the road against Ole Miss. This is the 6:00 PM game on ESPN, and it'll probably be another gut-check for the Aggies. Bleacher Report predicts they'll get a 31-27 upset win, while College Football News thinks Ole Miss holds on in a 27-23 nail-biter. After last week, I have zero confidence in A&M's quarterback situation.

The other SEC games on television:

Auburn (4-2) at Arkansas (2-4) at 11:00 AM on SEC. The Razorbacks are the favorite at 5.5 points. Bleacher Report thinks they'll win 28-24, and CFN calls it for Arkansas too (27-23). With Auburn still ahead on TAMU's schedule, I'll root for Arkansas tomorrow. UPDATE: It took four goddamned OTs to do it, but Arkansas finally beat Auburn 54-46. Texas A&M only scored 28 on the Razorbacks.

Tennessee (3-3) at Alabama (6-1) at 2:30 PM on CBS. The afternoon showcase game has the Tide as a huge 15.5 point favorite. I've seen what Bama can do, and I won't be surprised if they roll up the Volunteers. Bleacher Report calls it a 37-20 win for the home team, and CFN picks the Tide 34-20. I'll watch this until Tennessee gets behind by ten points. UPDATE: As they say, the great teams find ways to win, and Alabama escaped a Tennessee upset bid 19-14 with some big plays late in the game.

Missouri (4-3) at Vanderbilt (2-4) at 3:00 on SEC. Basically a nothing game for me, but I may watch a little of it to see what future A&M opponent Vanderbilt has to offer. Missouri is favored by 2.5 points as a visitor. CFN thinks Mizzou will cover the spread (20-13), while Bleacher Report likes Vandy in a 20-13 upset. UPDATE: Vanderbilt won a shootout 10-3.

UPDATE 7:54 PM Saturday 24 October: Ole Miss is ahead 16-3 at the half in the ugliest fucking football performance Texas A&M has puked up since the 2014 season. The defense has played fairly well other than committing too many penalties that helped Ole Miss extend a scoring drive and maintain ball control. The A&M offense is a complete abortion, with the single FG coming after an Ole Miss turnover. The team isn't ready to play, and that has to be the fault of the coaching staff. Worst of all, Kyle Allen seems to be going through a replay of the unexpected disintegration we witnessed last year with Kenny Hill.

UPDATE 11:02 PM Saturday: Ole Miss won 23-3, but I skipped the second half other than a few series in the third quarter. Every time the defense made a big play to get the ball for the offense, the A&M offense pissed the opportunity down a rathole.

For four seasons, Texas A&M had an effective offense and a defense that usually couldn't hold decent opponents under 30 points. Now that Sumlin finally has a defense capable of competing in the SEC West, he has no quarterbacks, running backs, or offensive linemen capable of executing his game plans. And speaking of coaching, I could tolerate it as long as the Aggies were winning, but after consecutive losses to Alabama and Ole Miss, I'm through making excuses for the staff. What I saw tonight was unacceptable, embarrassing incompetence. Frankly, I'm fed up with this fucking shit.
