Thanksgiving weekend. Traditional rivalry games, like Michigan vs Ohio State. Texas Tech and TCU have replaced Texas A&M as alternating Thanksgiving rivals for the longhorns, something for which to be truly thankful. For the Aggies, it's been a season of disappointment and unkept promises, and it skids to a halt at 6:45 PM on Saturday at Missouri. Manziel and the Aggies have an opportunity to be humiliated on TV by a team called the Tigers on consecutive weekends. College Football News predicts that Missouri (favored by 4.5 points) will win a shootout 48-40. After its lackluster performance against the LSU Tigers, I'm not confident the A&M offense can produce a lot of points against the Missouri Tigers.
In the BDF, the new turkey day rivalry game matches Texas Tech, a four point underdog, against the longhorns in Austin (where the game will always be played from now on). CFN thinks the horns will cover easily (37-27). The Big Game in the SEC will be the Iron Bowl on Saturday, with Alabama (favored by 10.5) visiting Auburn. Having seen both teams against the Aggies, I would expect this to be a close game, but CFN disagrees. They pick the Tide by 34-13. A three TD win? Hmmm...
For the hell of it, I'll probably try to see some of the other traditional rivalries (Ohio State vs Michigan, UCLA vs USC, Mississippi State vs Ole Miss, Clemson vs South Carolina) if they're on TV at a convenient time.
Added 8:20 PM Saturday: At the half, Texas A&M 14 Missouri 7. Much closer than expected, and not nearly as many points scored as expected.
This hasn't been a good day for me when it comes to football. I was pulling for Michigan to upset Ohio State (a formula call). Instead, Michigan lost 42-41. They went for the win instead of a tie to force overtime, and the pass on their two-point play was intercepted. It was a hell of a game except for that play. The Iron Bowl was also a classic. Alabama and Auburn swapped body blows all afternoon, and Auburn won the SEC West 34-28 on another miracle play (see the Georgia game). This time, with the game tied at 28-28 and one second remaining, Saban decided to try a long FG for the win. The kick was short, and was returned 100 yards for a touchdown. Two games that should have gone into overtime were lost because the coaches chose to try for a win in regulation. I was pulling for the Tide, so I was 0-2 as the Aggie game started.
Added 10:16 PM Saturday: A wasted day. Watched two traditional rivalry games and the Aggie season finale, and all three of the teams I rooted for had a chance to win in the fourth quarter, or at least try to win in OT. All three lost instead. Tied 21-21, the Aggies surrendered another late 4th quarter touchdown, and didn't have what it took to get a comeback win. So the game ended 28-21, and the season ended 8-4.
Two SEC teams that A&M crushed in 2012 (Auburn and Missouri) will play in the 2013 conference championship game. I'll pull for Auburn, because I hate Missouri. Before the season, I thought A&M's best case scenario was 10-2 in the regular season, with 8-4 as the worst case scenario. I was pretty sure Alabama and LSU would win, but I wasn't sure if there were two other SEC teams who could upset A&M. There were, and they'll be facing off next week for prize money. Sumlin's team is headed in the opposite direction, and once Manziel and Evans are gone, they'll probably slide even further down the SEC food chain. So be patient with me, because this has been a gloomy day.
