Football 2013: Week Fifteen

First weekend in December, and we're on the verge of running out of college football games on Saturday afternoon. This is the so-called championship Saturday, since three major conference championship games are scheduled, and there are two games that will settle the winner of the Big Dumpster Fire.

In the Big 10, Ohio State is a 5.5 point favorite to beat Michigan State. The game will be shown on Fox, meaning that I'm not likely to watch all of it. As a general rule, any programming shown on Fox (news, sports, or entertainment) will be unwatchable trash. I stopped watching NFL games when Fox secured the rights to cover the NFC home games. Ohio State beat Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, and again in the Sugar Bowl after the Aggies won their single BDF championship in 1998. Therefore, I'm pulling for MSU to win in an upset. College Football News disagrees, predicting Ohio State by ten, 27-17.

The ACC has an apparent mismatch: Florida State (favored by 29) against Duke, this year's Cinderella story at 10-2. FSU is unbeaten, should have a Heisman Trophy winner at QB, and is expected to play in the BCS championship game. CFN predicts a rout, 49-17 Seminoles. I'll watch some of this game to see what the Blue Devils have going for them, since there's a chance A&M will play Duke in their bowl game.

Saturday's Big Game is the SEC championship, Auburn favored by two vs. Missouri. I saw both of Auburn's miracle finishes (against Georgia and Alabama), and Missouri's lone loss (to South Carolina). I started hating Mizzou when A&M was playing them in the BDF, so I'm leaning slightly toward Auburn in this game. CFN thinks it will be a 34-23 Missouri win.

Severe winter weather may influence the BDF championship. Oklahoma State is leading the pack, and is a ten-point favorite against visiting rival Oklahoma. CFN is predicting the Cowboys will beat the Sooners 45-40. In Waco, Baylor hosts the longhorns as a 15-point favorite. A win in this game would probably help Mack lock down his job for at least one more year, but who the fuck knows? CFN says the Bears win handily, 38-20. I hate all four BDF teams, so these games interest me only for their schadenfreude potential. All factors considered, the best outcomes would be OSU and longhorn wins.

Added 5:02 PM Saturday: In Stillwater, Okie State puked up a huge 33-24 loss to the Sooners in their rivalry game, and kissed the BDF championship goodbye in the process. In Waco, with about five minutes left in the third quarter, Baylor leads the longhorns by two TDs, 17-3, in freezing weather. I'm still trying to assimilate 11-1 Baylor winning the BDF title. In the SEC championship game, it's Auburn 28 Missouri 27 at the half. Every time one Tiger team starts to look invincible, the other Tiger team does something awesome. The Auburn running game looks unbeatable, but Auburn's defense can't stop Missouri's passing game. Hard to believe Texas A&M routed both of them last year.

Added 7:08 PM Saturday: Baylor rolled the longhorns 30-10 and won the so-called BDF championship game. I hate 'em both. Auburn's running game continued to be an unstoppable force, and led to a 59-42 win over Missouri. Based on the offensive firepower shown by both contenders, I don't know how Texas A&M's defense kept the scores as close as they were. I don't know yet if Auburn will get an opportunity to play in the BCS title game, but they deserve to.

Added 10:26 AM Sunday: I turned off the Big 10 championship game early, so I missed out on the satisfaction of seeing Michigan State beat Ohio State 34-24. It hasn't been formally announced, but the Buckeye loss should put Auburn in the national championship game against Florida State, and THAT should be a game worth watching.
