Pea, but no pod ?

Tonight I watched a movie called The Invasion with Nicole Kidman. This is at least the third remake of the classic 1950s sci-fi film Invasion of The Body Snatchers, which some critics consider a metaphor for the unthinking conformity of the McCarthy era. Overall, The Invasion is a fair thriller and is in some ways more disturbing than the orginal film. The setting is modern America, established by references to Iraq, Baghdad, and GW Bush. Unlike the original, there are no pods in the literal sense, and there's a relatively happy ending in which the CDC is able to reverse the effects of the epidemic.

In the movie, the people who are transformed by the invading organism speak and behave much like ecstatic conservatives who are treating the selection of Sweet Pea as the greatest stroke of political genius in American history: "Join us. There is no pain... simply do nothing. Ours is a better world." To me, the similarities are a little spooky.
