Football 2023: Opening Weekend

It seems like a long time since I was even somewhat excited by the thought of watching Texas A&M play a football game on TV. That's the result of Jimbo's 5-7 record last season, a level of putrid failure that even Kevin Sumlin avoided, which included an embarrassing loss to Appalachian State and a sickening loss to an Alabama team trying to give A&M an upset victory.

At Aggieland, there's always a next season. Last year's version of Next Season begins tomorrow at Kyle Field against New Mexico (6:00PM on ESPN). The visitors were even worse last year (2-10) than Jimbo's underachievers, which explains a 38 1/2 point spread favoring the home team. Modest enthusiasm has been created among Aggie fans by the hiring of Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator. We'll soon find out if a new OC is really the cure for A&M's struggle to sustain drives and score touchdowns. Numerous players who helped recent recruiting classes be highly rated left A&M for greener pastures via the transfer portal, and Jimbo added a few transfers to his roster. Fisher's 2023 recruiting class was ranked 15th nationally and 6th in the SEC. The Aggies lost gifted running back Devon Achane, and lack an experienced starting quarterback with proven ability.

All factors considered, there's no reason to get stirred up over the New Mexico game. I'll watch some of it seeking hints of transformation. College Football News predicts the Aggies will win 38-6 without covering the spread.

Update: Texas A&M won 52-10.
