FOOTBALL 2022: Tenth Week, Part 2

After losing to Florida yesterday, Texas A&M is 3-6, with two probable beatings (by Auburn and LSU) still ahead, and one possible win (U. Mass) in between. It's very possible that the best record Aggies can hope to achieve is 4-8. This should be unacceptable.

To provide a frame of reference, I hit the 2022 football media guide to refresh my memory. Looking at Texas A&M football for roughly the last 40 years, here are the worst season records posted by the coaches who followed the Tom Wilson debacle:

  • Jackie Sherrill went 5-6 in his first season (1982).
  • R.C. Slocum never fell below 6-6 (in 1996 and 2002).
  • Dennis Franchione, considered a flop, went 4-8 in 2003 (first season).
  • Mike Sherman also had a 4-8 record in 2008, his first season.
  • Kevin Sumlin's worst season, his last, was a winner (7-6).

The only A&M coaches to post 4-8 records in four decades did it in their first year, not their fifth year. Can Jimbo get this bunch to outscore either Auburn (on the road) or LSU at home? Is 6-6 even a remote possibility?
