FOOTBALL 2021: COVID Version Week 13

It seems like the season has whizzed by, and the regular season finale is tomorrow when A&M (8-3) plays LSU (5-6) at 6:00 PM on ESPN. The Aggies are 6.5 point favorites as the visiting team.

This looks like the sort of game that's been problematic for the Aggies, who've been unimpressive in some of their away games:

  • Against Colorado at Denver, won 10-7
  • Against Arkansas at Arlington, lost 20-10
  • Against Ole Miss at Oxford, lost 29-19

LSU has been struggling this season, and may be on the verge of replacing Ed Orgeron as head coach, but LSU has been nearly impossible for A&M to beat since joining the SEC West (two wins, seven losses). On the positive side, both A&M wins have come with Jimbo Fisher as head coach. College Football News predicts that LSU will hang tough, but A&M's ball control offense and scoring defense will eventually result in a 24-14 Aggie win. I'd be satisfied with that score, but it isn't hard for me to visualize LSU winning at home by the same score.

Final update 11:27 PM: Texas A&M never trailed LSU by more than 14 points, so I stayed with this abortion from beginning to end. The Aggies fell behind early, and didn't get their first lead (24-20) until midway through the 4th quarter. The Aggies were still ahead by that score with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game, and LSU facing 4th down and 6 yards to go at their own 19-yard line.

One more solid defensive play was needed. Hold LSU to less than 6 yards, then run the last minute off the clock and head for home as winners.

But noooo...

The Aggies let LSU convert on 4th down, then allowed them to zip down the field on a few long pass completions, with the last one for the TD and the 27-24 win. One more disappointment in a season that had several, and more disappointing because the 2020 team was so successful. Aggies typically love traditions, but the tradition of backsliding football teams isn't one of 'em.
