FOOTBALL 2021: COVID Version Week 8

It's hard to believe the college football regular season is more than half over. Texas A&M (5-2) plays its last relatively easy SEC game at home against South Carolina tomorrow (SEC Network at 6:30 PM). The Gamecocks (4-3) got their wins against three non-conference softies, plus a 21-20 squeaker over Vanderbilt. The better SEC teams (Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee) have generally rolled over them.

The Aggies are a three-touchdown home favorite, but for much of the season, the A&M offense has performed like it often did before Kellen Mond's senior year, with plenty of incomplete passes and enough turnovers and quarterback sacks to keep it frustrating. Zach Calzada is improving at roughly the same pace that Mond did, but he has notched a win against Alabama, which Mond never could.

The Gamecocks have lost their starting quarterback for the rest of the season, and their defense hasn't been anything special. College Football News expects the A&M rushing offense can be effective enough to cover the spread with a 35-13 win.

Update 8:11 PM Saturday. The Aggies scored on a 95-yard punt return after stopping the Gamecocks on their opening drive. That set the tone for the rest of the first half, which ended with A&M leading 31-0.

Final update 11:16 PM Saturday: Ahead 44-0 in the 4th quarter, the A&M second and third team players started replacing the first team players, with the expected results. South Carolina finally scored a touchdown, and added another in garbage time (seconds remaining in the game). Final score 44-14. Serious football resumes against Auburn next time.
