Football 2019: Week Three

More early-season college football this weekend, meaning a few mildly interesting games sprinkled into a steady stream of mismatches. One of those mismatches will be played at Texas A&M (ESPNU at 6:00 PM), when Lamar (2-0) visits the Aggies (1-1). There's no line on the game, and College Football News expects A&M to dominate in a 55-3 win. The Aggies weren't very impressive against Clemson, and this may be the kind of game that will give me an early look at one or more of the quarterbacks behind Kellen Mond on the depth chart.

Alabama (2-0) plays at South Carolina (1-1) in the CBS showcase game at 2:30 PM. This match is an indication of how dull the SEC schedule is in week three. Bama is favored to drub the Gamecocks by 25 points, and CFN predicts the Tide will cover the spread in a 44-17 steamrolling. Game is significant only because A&M plays both teams this season.

There are two other games that might be a little bit interesting. Kansas State (2-0) is on the road at Mississippi State (2-0) as a 7.5 point underdog. I hated K-State when A&M was in the Big 12, and I hate MSU now that A&M plays in the SEC West. CFN sees the home team winning 27-23, but I'd be satisfied if K-State pulls off an upset win. This is the 11:00 AM game on ESPN, which is the only reason I might see part of it. Kansas and Mississippi are two of the worst red states, so a 0-0 tie would be best if that was possible under the OT rules.

Finally, Florida (2-0) is at Kentucky (2-0) in an SEC East game (ESPN at 6:00 PM). The Gators are an 8-point favorite, and CFN forecasts Kentucky will lose 27-17. I'll get score updates on this one while I watch the A&M game.

Update No. 1 Saturday 7:25 PM: The Aggies are ahead of Lamar 27-0 at the half. Two promising drives fizzled out and ended with FGs instead of TDs. The score should be a 35-0 Aggie lead, but at times they look like they're mailing it in. A freshman RB looks good, but it's Lamar. Let's see how things go against Auburn. In the early game, Kansas State got a 31-24 road win at Mississippi State. In the game matching future A&M opponents, Alabama gave South Carolina a 47-23 beating, but wasn't able to cover the spread.

Update No. 2 Saturday 9:25 PM: CFN predicted the Aggies would win 55-3, and that was the score with about 2 minutes left in the game. Then A&M got one last touchdown to finish 62-3. The team performed a little more efficiently in the second half, and some of the young players on offense (QB Calzada, RB Spiller, and WR Smith) showed potential.
