Football 2017: Week One

On October 8th last year, Texas A&M beat Tennessee 45-38. That was the last meaningful Aggie win of the 2016 season, and was followed by conference losses to Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and LSU, and a sickening bowl game loss to former Big 12 rival Kansas State. After the bowl game, A&M said goodbye to several star players, notably Trevor Knight and Myles Garrett.

This weekend, the new college football season gets underway, and as usual, the schedule is loaded with mismatches that aren't worth watching on TV. There are four games with the potential to be exciting, and those are the ones I'll watch for at least the 1st quarter, and longer if the game's close.

There are three Saturday games:
  • Michigan vs. Florida (on ABC at 2:30 PM). The Wolverines are favored by 5.5 points, and College Football News predicts they'll win 23-16. Final score: Michigan won 33-17.
  • Florida State vs Alabama (on ABC at 7:00 PM). Bama is a TD favorite, and CFN forecasts a 31-23 win over the Seminoles. Final score: Alabama won 24-7.
  • Brigham Young vs LSU (on ESPN at 8:30 PM). I'll only watch this if the Alabama game against FSU is stinking on ice. LSU is favored by 13.5 points, but CFN sees this game as a little closer than that, with BYU losing 26-16. Final score: LSU won 27-0.
And there's one Sunday game:
  • Texas A&M at UCLA (on Fox at 6:30 PM): Last year, the Aggies surprised me by beating UCLA at home in a tense game that went into OT. This time, A&M is a 3.5 point underdog on the road, and CFN expects the Bruins to knock them off 37-31. That sounds about right, considering A&M has what looks like serious talent limitations at its QB position. This game is being shown on Fox, and unless A&M is performing at a superior level on offense, defense and special teams, I'll be very tempted to ditch this game after a quarter. In television, trash is spelled F-O-X, and I'm in no mood to put up with their crap just to see the Aggies stumble through another embarrassing ass-kicking. Final score update: UCLA won 45-44, after trailing 44-10 with just over 4 minutes left in the third quarter. This game can be added to the catalog of mind-boggling monumental failures in the history of Aggie football, and the total collapse of A&M's offense, defense, and special teams in the 4th quarter must have set a record of some kind. If it didn't, it should have. It's difficult to imagine this team winning more than one SEC game this season.
