Football 2015: Week Three

It seems like we wait forever for football season to begin, then once it starts, it's over in no time. After today, Texas A&M will have played 25 percent of the regular season schedule.

The TV games that earn my attention are these:

Nevada at Texas A&M: The Aggies are favored by 34.5 points at home, and College Football News predicts they'll win without covering the spread (48-17). On the SEC Network at 11:00.

Auburn (18) at LSU (13): The SEC showcase game on CBS at 2:30 pm.  Louisiana State is favored by 7.5 points, and CFN forecasts a close win (26-20). Auburn has been unimpressive so far, so they need to show well here to retain Top 20 status.

Texas Tech at Arkansas: A hated former Big 12 rival against the team that A&M faces next week. The Razorbacks were embarrassed in last week's upset loss, but are favored by 11.5 points (6:00 on ESPN). CFN thinks Arkansas will dump the Red Raiders (44-31). I can't decide who to pull for here, but I don't think seeing either team lose will break my heart.

Ole Miss (15) at Alabama (2): Another solid TV game at 8:15 on ESPN, featuring two more of A&M's future SEC West opponents. Bama is the favorite at 6.5 points, and CFN sees them winning a squeaker 23-17. I want to see if Ole Miss is as good as everyone says they are.

Updated 12:40 PM Saturday: The Aggies lead 24-10 at the half, but it's an unimpressive lead. Too damn many wasted opportunities on offense, and too much slack in the defense. Texas A&M has at least one non-conference game like this every year. They let an inferior opponent stay too close too long, and a game that should be a comfortable win turns out to be a nail-biter instead. At this point, A&M is nowhere close to five TDs better than Nevada.

Updated 2:36 PM Saturday: The final score was 44-27 (a 20-17 game in the second half). Every time I thought A&M was on the verge of putting the game away, they seemed to blow a scoring opportunity on offense or give up a big play on defense. They had occasional flashes of brilliance, but nothing that looked like sustained excellence. This level of performance won't hack it in the games that are coming soon. There's always a chance that Nevada is much better than we thought, but I doubt it.

Updated 10:50 PM Saturday: Ole Miss has been too much for Alabama and leads 24-10 after one of the craziest TD passes I ever saw. Both of them look like they'll be more than A&M can handle, at least if the Aggies play like they did today.

LSU stomped Auburn 45-21, Arkansas lost 35-24 to Texas Tech, and South Carolina was rolled 52-20 by Georgia. Based on the scores today, I'd say A&M has a good chance to beat Arkansas, Auburn and South Carolina. Beating Ole Miss, Alabama or LSU will be a tall order, and will require flawless execution by the Aggies.
