Football 2013: Week Nine

According to the Fearless Forecast at College Football News, the Aggies are favored by 18 points and predicted to squeeze by Vanderbilt 41-34. The word is out on Texas A&M's defense, and respect is getting harder to come by as a result. Other SEC games featuring past or future A&M opponents, with CFN's predicted result:
  • Alabama, favored by four TDs, blows out Tennessee 38-10
  • Mississippi State, favored by 10 points, whips Kentucky 30-17
  • LSU, favored by 47 points, demolishes Furman 52-6
  • Missouri, favored by a FG, knocks off South Carolina 31-21
Missouri is to SEC 2013 what Texas A&M was to SEC 2012, minus a Heisman winner. They're a lot better than most people expected, and they're winning high-profile games against the presumed elite of the SEC East. They've also been an Aggie nemesis in two conferences. Since 2000, Missouri and A&M have played seven times, with the Aggies winning twice (2006 and 2012). The early speculation has Mizzou playing Alabama for the SEC championship.

Added 1:06 PM Saturday: Texas A&M leads 28-17 at the half. The Aggies cruised to a 28-0 lead before Vanderbilt kicked a FG to make it 28-3. The Commodores recovered an ensuing onside kick and dominated the rest of the second quarter. This has to potential to be another nail-biter.

Added 2:56 PM Saturday: Aggies 56 Vanderbilt 24. Not a nail-biter after all, since the Aggies began the third quarter with an interception returned for a touchdown to lead 35-17.  There was a long stretch in the middle of the game that was sloppy, but Vanderbilt never closed the gap once the second half was underway. Even better, Manziel was able to leave the field mid-3rd quarter and rest his shoulder. While he was playing, I didn't see any hints that he was limited by the injury. The defense played as well as it has in any SEC game this year, with several interceptions and good pressure on the quarterback (seven sacks). After their ordeal against Auburn, this was the kind of game the Aggies needed. Yeah, it was Vandy, not LSU, but take what you can get these days.

Added 10:03 PM Saturday: Fuck goddamn Missouri. I started hating those bastards in the Big 12, and I resent them getting so much attention this season. Well, they aren't indestructible after all. I just finished watching Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks knock Missouri out of the unbeaten ranks. Final score 27-24, with the win coming in the second overtime period when the Missouri kicker bounced his attempt at a tying FG off the upright. Mizzou was ahead 17-0, but SC came back in the 4th quarter to tie it 17-17 and send it into OT. Good game since it ended the way I wanted it to end.
