Football 2013: Week Four

Last Saturday, the Aggies played the game of the century against defending national champions Alabama. This coming Saturday they'll play the game of the day at home against Southern Methodist. A blogger with plenty of free time has posted the results of his scientific analysis on Good Bull Hunting, and concludes that A&M will win 58-24. If that is in fact the final result, it will represent an improvement in A&M's scoring defense, which gave up 28 points to SHSU, for god's sake.

Other SEC games on TV includes Tennessee at Florida, Arkansas at Rutgers, and Auburn at LSU. Two of those games feature three of A&M's future opponents, and I'll probably check them out for scouting purposes. I already know LSU will be a tough challenge. Last year, the Aggies steamrolled Arkansas and Auburn. Both now have new coaches, and should be more formidable in 2013, especially since A&M's defense leaks like a sieve.

Added 11:44 AM Friday: Reports in the newspapers concerning millions of dollars to lure Nick Saban to Texas U as replacement for Mack Brown. This is only of interest when the question is "Does Nick Saban present a greater threat to Texas A&M at Alabama or Texas?" While teasips get damp underwear with Saban dreams, College Football News predicts that Kansas State will hand the longhorns a third consecutive loss (31-27).

Added 6:55 PM Friday: Good Bull Hunting on Saban's impact in the recruiting arena if he left Bama for the longhorns.

Added 7:58 PM Saturday: The Aggies lead 32-6 at the half. The game got sloppy late in the second quarter, with one penalty after another, botched plays by both teams, you name it. So far, the defense has played pretty well. The kicking game stinks, with three missed PATs. In a real game, that could be fatal.

Added 9:46 PM Saturday: Texas A&M wins 42-13. That would have been a great score last week, but it's only worth a B against SMU after a ragged 10-7 second half. Manziel got the last Aggie touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter, and it was a lot of pushing and shoving back and forth from then on. In Austin, the Mack Brownies are beating the crap out of Kansas State. The great Mack comeback of 2013 is underway. Sorry, Nick. Maybe next time.
