In terms of weather, this has been the lousiest day of the new year so far. Of course, since there've only been four, it's safe to say worse days are ahead in 2013. It's been cold (low forties) and damp all day. I ventured out long enough to get a newspaper and fill up the car, but it's the kind of day that discourages me because it's too cold and wet to walk outside for 45 minutes. That's my normal routine, and I get depressed on days when I don't do the three miles. I feel guilty. What made it worse is that being indoors most of the day left me with enough unoccupied time to fret over the Cotton Bowl, which kicks off in just under two hours.
I watched my first Cotton Bowl on TV as a senior at A&M. The Aggies beat Alabama in that one. I was married with kids when A&M played in their next Cotton Bowl; they beat Auburn and Heisman winner Bo Jackson. Two years later, they beat Notre Dame and Heisman winner Tim Brown. Those three wins were the Cotton Bowl high points for the Aggies since my freshman year in college -- they lost the other seven games.
This has been a different kind of year for the Aggies, based on what they've accomplished and how they did it. Typically, they've lost Cotton Bowl games and games against Oklahoma, so I'm having a hard time getting comfortable with this situation. On the other hand, beating OU in a Cotton Bowl will prove that traditional patterns really don't apply anymore.
Added 6:20 PM: College Football News predicts the Sooners win 38-34.
The SEC has won nine consecutive Cotton Bowl games. Now that the Aggies represent the SEC instead of the Big 12, can they keep the string going?
Added 8:48 PM: The Aggies are ahead 14-13 at the half. Penalties called against A&M have kept the score closer than it needs to be. I was afraid this game would be an ordeal, and it's been one so far.
Added 10:04 PM: Aggies ahead by three TDs as the 4th quarter begins (34-13). A good third quarter. If the Aggies can't make 21 points hold up for 15 minutes, I'm gonna puke.
