Football 2012: Week Two

College Football News says it's Aggies 27 Florida 23.

Apparently, Florida was unimpressive in their opening game last week, at least enough to make them a tiny underdog on the road at TAMU.

Good schedule of TV games today. At 11:00, Miami at Kansas State. Pulling for Miami. Old hatreds die hard, and I hate Big 12 teams. More interesting: Auburn at Mississippi State. I'll be watching to scout two future Aggie opponents and SEC West rivals.

At 2:30, Florida at Kyle Field. The Aggies caught a break with the weather... a little cool front will keep the temperature around 90 degrees. They're favored by about 1.5 points, and I'll watch as long as the Aggies are ahead, even, or no more than 10 points behind. If Florida gets a big lead early, my fallback position will be Southern Cal vs Syracuse. My favorite cousin is a Syracuse grad, and I watch some of their games out of kinship.

The evening games are Washington at LSU (pulling for the Huskies to get an upset), Nebraska at UCLA (pulling for the Bruins over the Huskers), and Georgia at Missouri (pulling for the Bulldogs since I hate Missou based on Big 12 history).

Halftime score: Aggies 17 Florida Gators 10. So far I haven't seen any of the problems I expected. Coaching has been excellent, Manziel looks like a 5th year senior instead of a redshirt freshman, and the defense has been adequate, even making some big plays at key moments. Last year, a halftime lead against a good opponent usually disappeared in the third quarter. We'll see. I'm nervous, but maybe things will end well.

Kansas State demolished Miami 52-13, and Mississippi State unloaded on Auburn 28-10. Based on the score, MSU may be tougher for the Aggies than Auburn. Wouldn't have seen that coming.

Added 5:14 PM: Florida 20 Aggies 17, early 4th quarter. I think I've seen this movie before.

Added 5:58 PM: Final score 20-17. The loss is not a surprise, but the way it happened is a real disappointment. TAMU was outcoached and outplayed up and down the line in the 3rd and 4th quarters, which is exactly what happened too many times in 2011. Florida's coaches figured out Sumlin's offense and didn't need much time to do it. That bothers me.
