In some ways it seems like it never got started, but the regular season ends tomorrow for the Aggies. The Thanksgiving weekend is usually one of the best in college football because so many of the classic rivalry games are played then: Ohio State and Michigan, Auburn and Alabama, Texas and TAMU. I've picked about six games that are potentially worth watching on TV between now and Saturday night.
One rivalry that will hopefully disappear after tomorrow is Texas U. versus Texas A&M. The first football game I ever saw was A&M against Texas at Kyle Field, late 1950s. I've lived among Aggies my entire life, so hating Texas has been a habit for me since adolescence. Playing them always ties my stomach in knots, and frankly I can live a happier life without the stress.
The Aggies and the horns have both dropped out of the national rankings, but the oddsmakers have A&M listed as a 7.5 point favorite. College Football News predicts the Aggies will cover the spread in a 34-17 win. That seems a little one-sided to me, but I hope the pick is accurate. In the last game of the series, I want the Aggies to get a huge lead early, then HOLD ON TO WIN for a change.
Added 10:00 pm, Thanksgiving night: I watched the Aggies against the horns as long as I could stomach what I was seeing, which was until halftime. At that point, A&M was ahead 16-7, and was playing just well enough to have a small lead but not well enough to put the game away. A minute ago, I checked the radio to get a score update and heard that the horns were ahead 24-16 and driving again. Unless A&M is able to do something tonight they haven't done all year (stage a 4th quarter comeback), this game is history and the Aggies will end another season bogged down in 6-6 mediocrity, with a loss in a minor bowl game looming on the horizon. Oh well... fuck it.
Added 10:26 pm: Sudden thought -- if the Aggies were allowed to skip the third quarter of every game, there's a good chance they'd be undefeated this year.
Added 10:35 pm: Trivia question: When was the last time an Aggie quarterback had a sensational season in his senior year ? This is a serious question... I can't remember.
Added 10:59 pm: The motherfucking horns kick a FG on the last play of the game to win 27-25 and spoil what could've been an Aggie comeback win that would've been fondly remembered for decades to come. This shit just rips my heart out.
