Football 2011: Week Eleven

It's hard to believe this football season is nearly over. It seems like only a few hours ago I was swapping emails with my bro about the possibilities for the 2011 Aggies. He was more optimistic than I was, but his enthusiasm was contagious and I halfway convinced myself that maybe the breakthrough in late 2010 would sweep A&M to new heights of gridiron glory. Well, that's not exactly how things have worked out.

Tomorrow at 11:00, the Kansas Jayhawks show up at Kyle Field wondering if the Aggies have one more second-half collapse left in them. At 2-8, Kansas has been even less effective than A&M and this game should be a gimme unless the Aggies have decided to start mailing it in. At 5-5, the Aggies are not yet certain to finish the season with a winning record, much less in the Top 25, so this can't be rated as a nothing game. Still, it's impossible to imagine A&M losing. College Football News sees it 45-23, meaning the Aggies would win convincingly without covering the (30.5) point spread. That seems like a realistic projection, all factors considered.

Added 12:48 pm, Saturday: It's 44-0 in favor of the Aggies at halftime. Kansas is the cure for what was ailing them, as they say, and if A&M needed a game to help them feel good about themselves, they're getting one today. The Aggies look awesome on offense and defense, proving again that sometimes WHO you play is as important as HOW you play. All those CTs who brought dates to the game are getting some good loving with so much scoring, and I say good for them.

On the radio, I just heard that Oklahoma State played Iowa State on TV last night, and Iowa State got an upset win in OT. Strange season, and A&M's win over ISU is looking better.

Added 1:18 pm: Aggies 51, Jayhawks 0 in early 3rd quarter action. I think A&M covers the spread after all. The Aggies will be able to give their backup quarterback some playing time. Now if Kansas State can knock off the longhorns tonight, it'll have been a good day for college football.

Added 2:44 pm: Final score 61-7. Kansas finally scored with less than a minute remaining, and the two Daves said there were a number of defensive backups on the field at the time.

Added 11:20 pm: Another crazy Saturday in the Big 12. Oklahoma, trying to stay in the hunt for the national championship, went to Baylor and lost 45-38. Oklahoma has been beaten by two teams the Aggies defeated, the red raiders and the bears. In Austin, Kansas State made up for beating the Aggies by upsetting the longhorns 17-13. I planned to watch that game but as it turned out, only caught bits and pieces. Too bad, because I love seeing Texas U lose. The Aggies can partially redeem a mostly wasted season by beating Texas next week. I can remember the days when most Aggies considered a 1-10 season pretty good as long as the 1 was the longhorns. I still think along those lines to some extent.
