This morning, I was driving home and noticed an Exxon station selling regular unleaded for 3.409/gallon. The station where I normally refill is selling the same gas for 3.559/gallon, so even though the gauge showed the tank over half full, I decided to take advantage of the price and top it off.
As I always do while the pump runs, I went inside the convenience store to see if they had an interesting newspaper on the rack. I was in the store maybe two minutes. As I came out, I realized the pump didn't shut off when the Jetta's tank was full and gas was pouring down the side of the car and streaming down the pavement... goddamn it to hell. Bottom line, I ended up buying approximately 12.8 gallons of gasoline, about half of which will never power an internal combustion engine. I ended up pissing away over twenty dollars, when the only reason I stopped in the first place was to save about a buck on a fill-up.
The moral of this tale: Don't trust gasoline pumps to shut off automatically, even though you've seen them do it about 100,000 times. Never leave a pump unattended unless you're willing to risk flushing away a double sawbuck. And... never think you can save money when dealing with Exxon.
