Bowling, and the luck of the draw

I haven't seen the complete schedule yet, but I imagine that of all the Big 12 teams playing in bowl games this year, the Aggies drew the toughest opponent: LSU in the Cotton Bowl. The Big 12 North champion, Nebraska, gets Washington in the Holiday Bowl, and the conference champ, Oklahoma, faces Connecticut. Other Big 12 bowl game foes are Iowa (Missouri), Illinois (Baylor), Arizona (Oklahoma State), Syracuse (Kansas State), and Northwestern (Texas Tech). None of those seven would concern me nearly as much as 10-2 Louisiana State, a top team in the best conference in the country.

The Aggies have been surprising me every week since the Texas Tech game, and I've finally realized that many of their old patterns and tendencies are no longer applicable. There are two burdens remaining to be cast off: a recent habit of getting thumped by good teams from the SEC, and a sorry record in bowl games since the Slocum era. If the Aggies can muster a win over LSU, it will add an exclamation point to what has thus far been their most promising season in a decade.
