Now the games are for real...

I never realized how important I was until I answered the phone tonight without first checking the caller ID screen. Until now, I did NOT realize that the charity program known as Special Olympics of Texas was totally dependent upon my willingness to write them a check for fifty dollars.

In about twenty minutes, the Aggies kick off in Stillwater against Oklahoma State. Two 3-0 teams on ESPN. The Aggie 3-0 record should have an asterisk since the third win was a nailbiter against Florida International. The game tonight, against a team that has owned them recently, is the kind that TAMU has been blowing out their ass in recent years: a spotlight game at night on national television. If they can go on the road and get a win against a respectable opponent, maybe it'll be a sign that some corner has been turned. Or maybe not.

Added 8:34 pm, same day: Halftime score is 21-7, with TAMU in the lead. They've looked competent on offense, defense, and special teams. The Aggies were up 14-0 late in the second quarter and let OSU drive for a TD. I thought to myself, "Uh oh, here we go again." But the Aggies came right back with their best sustained drive of the night so far, and got the seven points back just before halftime. Thirty more minutes to go, but at the moment, things are lookin' good.

Added 10:32 pm, same day: That last thirty minutes was thirty too many. Final score 38-35, with OSU winning the second half 31-14. And it looks like the Aggies are still "the not quite ready for prime time players."
