Terminology
John Zogby at Huffington Post clarifies the difference between moderates and independents. I'm as guilty as anyone of using the terms interchangeably, but Zogby, a professional pollster, explains why thinking of moderates and independents as one and the same is a big mistake. I know I'm going to be more conscious of the distinction in the future when I write about political issues. For the record, I think of myself as both moderate and independent, even though I vote fairly consistently for Democrats in national elections because the GOP candidates always make me sick.
