Gridiron, Week Nine

The SEC brawl between LSU and Alabama is at halftime, with LSU leading 7-3. I've been watching mostly SEC games in HD this fall, and they're great if you love manly, hairy-chested defense and don't require a lot of touchdowns to be amused. Back in the old days, TAMU had a manly defense. They called themselves the wrecking crew, and deserved the credit for most of the games the Aggies won. Those was good times, as they say in Aggieland.

Speaking of the Aggies, they played Colorado (2-6) today and were bumped off, 35-34. TAMU takes great pride in their traditions, and one of the newest involves losing to an inferior opponent at least once per season. This tradition of Black Saturdays started in the latter years of Slocum's regime, and Franchione did his best to keep it alive. Sherman is so gung ho for A&M traditions that he began his tenure as head coach with a mind-numbing Black Saturday upset loss.

Losing on the road to Colorado, even when they stink on ice at 2-6, isn't really an ignominious embarrassment, since it's still hard to imagine Colorado as grossly inferior to the Aggies. Fortunately, there's still a potential loss ahead against Baylor, which will ensure the tradition lives another year if the team can pull it off.

Added 6:28 pm: The offenses got better or the defenses tired, but in the second half, there was a little more scoring and the Crimson Tide came back to win 24-15. I was pulling for them, since I have no use for LSU. The SEC is set, with Alabama meeting Florida for the conference championship and the winner of that game meeting Texas for the Big Enchilada. At least that's the way things are unfolding tonight.
