A bloody good sequel

Almost twenty years ago, my family watched the television mini-series that I still consider the best one ever: Lonesome Dove, based on the novel by Larry McMurtry. Every time they re-ran it I'd see it again, and I'll probably see the DVD version a few more times before I die.

While I was tuned in to one of the NFL playoff games on CBS, they showed teasers for Comanche Moon, based on the fourth and final book in McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series. The story is actually a "prequel" with the action taking place circa 1858. The teaser caught my attention, so we started watching Sunday night, pretty much out of curiosity. I wasn't expecting much, so I was surprised to get caught up in the plot. The second episode was last night, and the conclusion is tonight; frankly, I'll be sorry when it's over.

Comanche Moon is considerably bloodier than Lonesome Dove, which I guess reflects the changes in allowable television content since 1989. The actors playing Woodrow and Gus do a fine job capturing the mannerisms of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, who portrayed the same characters as old men in the first movie. The period details seem authentic, and since McMurtry himself wrote the script, there's a good mixture of action, suspense, humor, romance, and tragedy. It seems like all the best movies are able to combine those elements.

While we were watching last night, CBS used a screen crawler to update us on the results of the Michigan primary. Looks like Mormon Mitt came in first with 39 percent, followed by McCain at 30 percent. Mormon Mitt lives to fight another day, which is the outcome the Democrats were hoping for. The Ds seem to think their chances in November improve the longer the R race stays in turmoil. We shall see.
