FOOTBALL 2023: Thirteenth Week

Thirteen is supposed to be an unlucky number, so there's the first bad omen for the final week of Texas A&M's regular season. Last Saturday the Aggies proved they could win without Jimbo Fisher as long as they were playing a team like Abilene Christian at home. Now they must prove they can beat a rugged SEC West opponent on the road. A&M (7-4) plays an early ESPN game at 11:00 against LSU (8-3). The home team is favored by 11 1/2 points, and it should take a medium-sized miracle or at least six lucky breaks for A&M to scratch out a win, go home with a respectable 8-4 record, and have a chance at 9-4 (with a bowl game victory).

Returning to harsh reality, College Football News thinks the Aggies might have a modest advantage on defense, but LSU's outstanding quarterback will nullify their advantage in a 44-38 win.

Update Saturday 12:34 PM: Without Jimbo, the Aggies have been hanging tough against LSU and are ahead 17-14 at halftime.

Final update 4:35 PM: Yesterday I was fairly certain Texas A&M would need at least six huge lucky breaks to have any chance for an upset in a road game against one of the best teams in the SEC. I watched most of the game, and don't remember the Aggies getting a single lucky break, much less a half dozen of them. The result was predictable: A&M had a narrow lead through the third quarter, but collapsed on offense and defense in the fourth quarter and were hammered 42-30.
