FOOTBALL 2022: Second Week

Texas A&M got a 31-0 win against Sam Houston State in the opener, but despite the lopsided score, the Aggie offense wasn't that impressive in the first half. Maybe Haynes King is the hottest quarterback on the A&M roster, but if he is, Jimbo Fisher's in for problems when the conference games begin.

The Aggies get another winnable game against a small conference (Sun Belt) opponent at home tomorrow (on ESPN2 at 2:30 PM), and are 18 or 19 point favorites, depending on where you see the line. In their first game, Appalachian State played North Carolina, and lost 63-61. Either the UNC defense is mediocre, or the Aggies will be tested by a scary offense tomorrow. College Football News predicts that A&M will be able to control the ball for long stretches of time, and should win 34-17.

The other potentially interesting SEC game features Alabama at Texas (11:00 AM on Fox). The Tide is favored on the road by 20 points, and CFN forecasts a 41-20 loss for the longhorns. I hate both Texas U and the Sabans, so I'll find something to like regardless of which team wins. The horns will be playing in the SEC soon, and the schedule will present more potential defeats than what they face in the Big Dumpster Fire. Their next game might be a preview of what they can expect in the future.

Update 6:05 PM Saturday: Well, shit. That was embarrassing. Appalachian State came in and took charge of the place with a 17-14 upset win. To say that A&M was overrated at number 6 is the understatement of the year. When Jimbo Fisher leaves, I'll look back at this abomination as the first day of the beginning of the end. He makes too much money for crap like this to be acceptable.

Over in Austin, Texas U gave the Tide all they could handle, but still lost 20-19. For the horns, a moral victory. For A&M, a demoralizing defeat.
