FOOTBALL 2020: COVID Version Week 7

Waiting for vote-counting to be finished in Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada has kept me preoccupied and despondent since Tuesday. I haven't given a thought to college football before today, and had to look it up online to know who Texas A&M will play tomorrow.

The Aggies (4-1) have improved in all phases of their game since the blowout loss against Alabama. Their running game is productive, the passing game is efficient, and the defense has been pretty solid in the four games won. There haven't been any noticeable weaknesses in the kicking game/special teams, and at the midpoint of their season, Texas A&M is looking like it belongs in the upper half of the SEC.

Having said all that, the Aggies travel to South Carolina (2-3) as a 7.5 point road favorite. The game will start at 6:00 PM on ESPN. College Football News points out that the Gamecocks are similar on offense and defense to A&M, but the Aggies execute a little better. Penalties against A&M may keep the game closer that it needs to be, and infractions that nullify long gains on offense have been a noticeable problem in their three recent wins.

So this won't be a romp, but if A&M continues to control the pace of the game with hard-nosed offense and defense, as they've been doing, CFN predicts they'll head home with a 34-24 win.

Update 7:43 PM: Solid on defense, effective on offense with a physical running game and an excellent performance by a tight end. We rarely saw football like this during the Sumlin era.  At the half, Texas A&M leads 21-0.

Final update 11:16 PM: The worst mistake A&M made all night was missing the PAT after the fourth touchdown. Final score was 48-3. Earlier this week, South Carolina reelected Lindsey Graham to the Senate. Fuck South Carolina.
