Watching Texas A&M struggle to beat Vanderbilt 17-12 last weekend was a poor way to launch a college season that already has so many factors working against it. This week, A&M travels to Alabama as a 17-point underdog in the 2:30 PM showcase game on CBS.
Based on the Vanderbilt game, A&M looks like a team that will need luck to finish 4-6 in a shortened season against only SEC opponents. The other wins? Well, maybe Arkansas, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. Any wins they can scratch out against Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi State will be appreciated, but not expected. Forget Alabama, LSU and Auburn.
College Football News thinks A&M will perform more effectively tomorrow than they did against Vanderbilt, but in the end, Alabama's running game will be more than the Aggies can handle in a 34-20 loss. Maybe covering the spread on the road would be something the team could build on, but Kellen Mond in 2020 looks about the same as he looked in 2017 when he was starting on Kevin Sumlin's last A&M team. A little better, but not as much development as anticipated.
Update 4:38 PM Sunday: The game yesterday was the annual stomping, final score 52-24. I gave up watching on TV when the score was 14-0 early, since I knew from seeing previous games that A&M can't possibly overcome a two-touchdown deficit against the Tide at Alabama (at least without JFF). I have a hard time visualizing this season making Jimbo Fisher look like the coach A&M thought they were hiring for all that dough. Maybe 4-6, with 5-5 as a possible best-case scenario. A 6-4 record or better? Break out the bottles of the good stuff.
