Football 2019: Week Two

Two of the biggest non-conference games of the SEC season will be played tomorrow on ABC. At 2:30 PM, Texas A&M visits Clemson. At 6:30 PM, Texas U hosts LSU in a meeting of the previous and the current Aggie Thanksgiving rivals

The Aggies got off to an impressive start in week one, but they'll need to play a perfect game on offense, defense and special teams to get out of South Carolina with a 2-0 record. Clemson is either number 1 or 2 depending on who you ask, and the Tigers are favored to win by 17.5 points. Assuming the weather isn't a factor, this game might be similar to the one last year at Kyle Field. Clemson escaped with a 28-26 win, but the Aggies kept the pressure on them for 60 minutes. Under the circumstances, losing a road game to a team of Clemson's status by a FG or less would have to be considered an acceptable outcome.

College Football News concedes the advantages Clemson has in this contest, but predicts Texas A&M will win in a 31-30 upset. I doubt that'll happen, but it would be nice to see.

In the evening game, the home team is a 5.5 point underdog. Everybody is high on the longhorns now, especially since they exploited a lackluster Georgia effort to win the Sugar Bowl last season. I hate LSU, but hate Texas U even more, so I'd love to see a thorough ass-whipping that pops the longhorn bubble. College Football News is forecasting a narrow 27-24 win for LSU, and I'd settle for that.

Update 4:20 PM Saturday: At the half, Clemson has a solid 17-3 lead. For Texas A&M, the defense has performed pretty well, but several players have left the field with injuries. On offense, Kellen Mond hasn't looked this ineffective since Kevin Sumlin was his coach. This doesn't have the feel of a game Texas A&M is likely to win without a ton of help from Clemson.

Update 5:20 PM Saturday: End of third quarter, Clemson ahead 24-3 and firmly in command. Clemson is superior to A&M at every position, and the Aggie offense with Mond is making them look even better. I'm over & out for this week, and thankful that I don't spend a dime on tickets or travel to A&M football games.

Update 6:13 PM Saturday: For the record, ESPN Scoreboard shows the final score was 24-10. Not quite the rout I feared, but not close enough to make me optimistic either.

Update 11:32 PM Saturday: I only watched the last two minutes of the 4th quarter, and it wasn't the one-sided score I asked for, but LSU held off the longhorns 45-38. For the day, I was a mediocre 1-1.
