Football 2019: Week One

The 2019 season started for the SEC last Saturday when Florida defeated Miami 24-20. Things really get underway tonight when Texas A&M welcomes Jake Spavital back to Kyle Field as head coach of Texas State. In the latter years of the Sumlin era, early-season non-conference games like this one were occasionally marked by A&M playing down to the level of their opponent. The Aggies are  favored by 34.5 points, and College Football News predicts they should handle Texas State in a 47-10 blowout.

In the Saturday games, most of the SEC teams are big favorites against pushovers, with lines ranging from Kentucky by 12 to Alabama by 34. There's one conference game, with Georgia favored by 21 points over Vanderbilt.

Three SEC non-conference games should be competitive enough to watch for at least a few minutes:
  • South Carolina is favored by 7.5 points over North Carolina, now coached by Mack Brown again.
  • Auburn is a narrow favorite (3 points) against Oregon.
  • Ole Miss is a 6-point underdog against Memphis.
Update 9:14 PM: It's been a workmanlike effort, with A&M ahead 28-0 at halftime. The defense has three interceptions, something we didn't see very often in 2018.

Update 10:55 PM: This was a taking-care-of-business game from start to finish. Final score 41-7, and backups played a lot of the 4th quarter. Next week won't be this easy.

Sunday Update: South Carolina couldn't cover the spread, but still beat North Carolina in a close one, 24-20. Auburn came from behind to beat Oregon 27-21 on a late 4th quarter TD pass. Memphis managed to thump Ole Miss 16-10 as expected. Two SEC teams got off to a bad start when Wyoming knocked off Missouri 37-31, and Georgia State embarrassed Tennessee 38-30.
