The Russians figured this shit out years ago. There was no way they could overwhelm the United States using anything resembling traditional warfare, and the retaliation factor took the nuclear threat off the table. Besides, there was really no reason to go to extremes. All they needed to do was get the right people into the right positions in the federal government, and Americans would destroy their own country themselves.
The situation the United States is facing today was in the planning and preparation stages for a long time, but only an idiot would look at what Donnie Hump and the Republicans are doing and deny that Vladimir Putin is loving every minute of it. For the Russians, willingness to play the long game is paying big dividends. The United States is already being written off by our allies, and our enemies understand which strings to pull to get whatever they want.
Sometimes the most obvious explanation is the correct one.
