Football 2017: National Championship

We're already more than a week into January 2018, and the 2017 college football season is finally reaching the end with the national championship game in Atlanta (at 7:00 PM on ESPN), a little over an hour from now. The game matches SEC champion Georgia (13-1) against SEC West runner-up Alabama (12-1).

Alabama is favored by four points, and College Football News predicts the Tide will gradually grind the Bulldogs down to win 24-17. In games like this, my formula requires me to root for Georgia. Alabama's overall record against Texas A&M is 7-2-0, with the first A&M win in the 1968 Cotton Bowl, and the second in 2012, in Johnny Manziel's Heisman season. Bama has crushed A&M in five consecutive games since the upset.

Georgia's record against A&M is 2-3-0, with all three losses occurring in the 1950s. Based on the A&M futility factor, Georgia gets the nod as per formula stipulations. It's close, though.

Tiebreakers aren't required in this situation, but if they were, Georgia would still be my pick. My favorite dog breed is the English bulldog, and I actually spent several hundred dollars to own one many years ago. Alabama's mascot is a goddamn elephant, same as the fucking Republican Party.

Then there's the fact that until Doug Jones won the special election over Roy Moore a few weeks ago, Alabama was the undisputed Asshole of the United States. Now Alabama is tied with Mississippi and Texas for the title, but they're still more fucked up than Georgia. So based on Intangibles (cool team mascots and relative crappiness of home state), I'll be pulling for a Bulldog upset tonight. I've had a pretty good day so far, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Update 8:56 PM: Georgia is ahead 13-0 at halftime, and up to this point, has played better on offense and defense than Saban's 4-point favorites. So far, so good.

Final Update 11:18 PM: The game turned out to be a classic SEC slugfest, but Alabama was the better team in the second half, after Saban replaced his starting quarterback with a true freshman. Regulation ended in a 20-20 tie, and Bama won 26-23 in the first OT period.
