Football 2017: Week Nine

After the bye week, Texas A&M rejoins the fight with a home game against Mississippi State. Both teams are 5-2, and the Bulldogs are favored by one point. On the car radio this morning, I heard Billy Liucci say that in the overall scheme of things, this could be A&M's biggest game of the year, since a win here would probably build some momentum for the Auburn game next week. I don't know about that, but with W's against Arkansas, South Carolina, and Florida, the Aggies already have two more SEC wins than I expected after their first two games.

MSU picked up an impressive 37-7 victory over LSU, then followed it with blowout losses to Georgia (28 points) and Auburn (39 points). The Aggies have been grinding out narrow wins over so-so SEC opponents, but haven't been blown out by anyone, including Alabama.

College Football News thinks A&M will scratch out a tough 20-17 win, and all factors considered, I'd gladly take that.

Update 9:16 PM: Sumlin Ball in the post-Manziel era has meant three teams that were entertaining in September, started fading a little in October, and turned to shit in November. The 2017 version turned to shit in the 4th quarter of the first game, then played five games of semi-respectable football before total collapse tonight. And it's not quite November. Sumlin needs three more wins to equal the mediocrity of 2014-2016, and I don't know where he's gonna get 'em. Update: The final score of this atrocity was 35-14. The A&M uniforms were so damned hideous they looked like Halloween costumes, and were one reason I bailed out on this mess in the first quarter. If this is the best Sumlin can come up with after a whole extra week to get ready, the program's in worse shape than I thought it was.

The other SEC games, with CFN score predictions:
  • Arkansas at Ole Miss (11:00 AM on SEC). Ole Miss favored by 3.5 points. Prediction: Arkansas 37-31, actual final score Arkansas 38-37.
  • Georgia vs Florida (2:30 PM on CBS). Georgia favored by 14 points. Prediction: Georgia 31-10, actual final score 42-7.
  • Vanderbilt at South Carolina (3:00 PM on SEC). The Gamecocks favored by 7 points. Prediction: S.C. 20-17, actual final score S.C. 34-27
  • Tennessee at Kentucky (6:30 PM on SEC). Kentucky favored by 5 points. Prediction: Tennessee 23-20, actual final score Kentucky 29-26.
Missouri also has a game against some non-conference schlub, but who cares?
