Football 2016: Week Ten

Week ten? Already? How can that be possible?

Another important SEC game for Texas A&M at 11:00 AM tomorrow, this time against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs won't have the quarterback, Dak Prescott, who gave the A&M defense so much trouble in 2014-15, since he's now playing for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Aggies are contending for a spot in the national championship playoff at 7-1, and MSU is limping along at 3-5. The Bulldogs are underdogs by nearly two touchdowns, and College Football News thinks A&M will cover the spread with a 38-17 win. That would make my day. UPDATE 12:02 PM SATURDAY: An inspired Mississippi State team is beating the shit out of an inept A&M team. Score is currently 21-7 in the second quarter. Looks like the Aggie collapse may be arriving late this year. FINAL UPDATE: Every time I start thinking about climbing aboard Kevin Sumlin's Aggie football bandwagon, they do something like this. Final score 35-28. Sooner or later, I guess I'll learn.

Florida (6-1) is favored by 5.5 points on the road against Arkansas (5-3) in the afternoon showcase game on CBS. The CFN choice is Arkansas 23-20 in a typical SEC defensive struggle. UPDATE: I'm glad A&M played Arkansas when they did. Today the hogs knocked off Florida 31-10. No way A&M could beat Arkansas now.

In other premium SEC action, Alabama (8-0) visits rapidly improving Louisiana State (5-2) in the CBS night game. The Tide is favored by 7.5 points, but CFN predicts an LSU upset win in another SEC defensive brawl (24-23). UPDATE: A real defensive struggle, but Alabama managed to score 10 points to win 10-0.

The remaining SEC games and CFN score predictions:
  • Ole Miss (3-5) crushes Georgia Southern (4-4) in a 41-17 blowout. FINAL SCORE: Ole Miss won 37-27. Not exactly the anticipated blowout.
  • Auburn (6-2) rolls over Vanderbilt (4-4) in a 37-13 mismatch. FINAL SCORE: Auburn played a schlub too, but unlike A&M, they won 23-16.
  • South Carolina (4-4) eases past visiting Missouri (2-6) in a 27-23 squeaker. FINAL SCORE: The Gamecocks get a 31-21 win.
  • Tennessee (5-3) finally catches an easy 45-13 win against Tennessee Tech (3-5). FINAL SCORE: The Vols won 55-0. Enough said.
  • Georgia (4-4) gets a much-needed 31-17 win against Kentucky (5-3). FINAL SCORE: Both teams 5-4 after Georgia squeezed out a 27-24 victory.
In the BDF, Texas U (4-4) goes to Lubbock to face Texas Tech (also 4-4). CFN expects a typical Big 12 minus 2 track meet, with the Strong horns outlasting the sand fleas 47-40. FINAL SCORE: As expected, Strong horns outscore sand fleas 45-37.
