The Laws of Football, Number 24

I've devoted several decades of Saturdays watching college football games at stadiums or on TV, and I've learned from extensive observation that the following rule applies in 99.68 percent of applicable situations:

THE RULE: When an unranked 21-point underdog (with as many defensive weaknesses as Texas A&M has) upsets a third-ranked home favorite (with as many offensive strengths as Auburn has), it's a virtual mathematical certainty that the highly regarded home favorite helped out the visiting underdog with at least two major breakdowns.

Yesterday, Auburn had three huge busts: a blocked field goal returned for an A&M touchdown, and two lost fumbles late in the 4th quarter (both unforced turnovers).

There are a few things in life you can take to the bank, and this football rule is one of them.
