Religious people, especially evangelical Christians, all share one common characteristic: the ability to suspend disbelief in the interest of their faith. In other words, they're able to accept pretty much anything that conforms to their spiritual belief systems, with no skepticism or cynicism whatsoever. Polished grifters like Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz will immediately recognize the opening this presents. To a polished grifter, the perfect mark is one who will never realize he's a mark, even after his bank accounts have been cleaned out.

Obviously, people who believe in creationism will fall for anything, and are perfect marks for a grifter who's skilled in dog whistling. A talented con artist will see them as targets of opportunity.
