Ed Kilgore at Washington Monthly asks the question: What are we supposed to think of this Edward Snowden character, the latest leaker of top secret information ?
Like General Buck Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove, I don't want to judge before all the facts are in, but my initial gut reaction toward this guy is not positive. If he wants my respect, he needs to get his ass back to the United States and deal with consequences like a man. If he can't do the time, he shouldn't do the crime -- even as a matter of principle.
Added 7:20 PM same day: The more I read about Snowden, the more I'm sure that I wouldn't question the purity of his motives so much if he stopped acting like a guy in search of a lucrative book/movie deal.
And Ed Kilgore again, this time with speculation about fragmentation among Republicans and Democrats. Democrats have been supporting Obama despite bitter disappointment with his perpetuation of Bush 43 policies in the anti-terrorism effort. Meanwhile, on the right, Kilgore suggests a looming showdown: the neo-cons versus tea party libertarians like golden boy Rand Paul. Which side will be more successful in maintaining partisan unity? This may be worth watching after all.
